A 2025 qualitative descriptive study published in *Health Expectations*, authored by Hawke and colleagues, examines precisely this tension. The study, titled "Working Together to Meet in the Middle," investigates what happens when people with lived experience (PWLE) and their family members are engaged in mental health and substance use health research โ€” and, crucially, what gets in the way.
